For a long time I ignored the Kdrama Mr. Queen.
I didn't like the idea of a man inhabiting a woman's body. Also, I'm not a fan of Sageuks (historical Kdramas). They're always terribly complicated and everybody betrays everybody.
Anyway, I was struggling to find a new Kdrama to watch, and Mr. Queen got this really high score on IMDb. So I decided to give it a try, in spite of my misgivings.
And I'm glad I did!
Who would have thought: I watched all 18 episodes of Mr. Queen.
And I agree with IMDb: it's a great Kdrama.
Mr. Queen: what's it all about?
There's this arrogant cook, who falls in a swimming pool from a great height. That's when his mind enters the body of Queen Kim So Yong. She was desperately unhappy and tried to kill herself.
Mr. Queen is Saguek, so it's complicated
Since Mr. Queen is a Saguek, there's all kinds of stuff going on behind the palace walls. To tell you the truth, a lot of all the conniving and backstabbing went way over my head... Like I said: I'm not very good with complicated storylines.
Normally that would make me stop watching a Kdrama.
But not this time.
And that's all because of the brilliant performance of the actress playing Queen Kim So Yong: Shin Hae Sun. I'm very impressed with the way she portrays a man trapped in a woman's body.
Why Mr. Queen is such a great Kdrama
If you're not all that much into Sagueks, like me, Mr. Queen is still a great Kdrama because of the clash between Kim So Yong's modern ideas and way of talking, and the way things were done in the Joseon era. I also loved the way her king, King Cheol Jong reacts to her strange sayings.
At first he kind of hates her, and thinks she betrayed him. But slowly and surely he starts to fall for her. And Kim So Yong for him, in spite of himself! The king even makes a special dictionary for the queen. Like her 'no touch rule' or 'antifan'.
Because he doesn't quite grasp lots of the modern way Kim So Yong speaks, this leads to very funny moments. Like when he says: 'You're truly my antifan!' like that's a good thing.
One of my favorite scenes
Mr. Queen: summing up
So, I really recommend this Kdrama, even though it's a Saguek.
Because it's also romantic and funny.
Om MyDramalist Mr. Queen is rated a 9, and I agree!
Practical information about Mr. Queen
I watched Mr. Queen at kissasian.sh. Unfortunately it's not on Netflix. You can also watch it on Viki where it's rated a 9.7!
